Description: this violin is a fine old Austrian instrument, the work of Anton Posch made in Vienna, whose original label it bears dated 1739.

Measurements: 35.7 cm in length of body, with widths of 17.0 cm and 20.8 cm.

Violin maker: Posch (Bosch), Anton. B. 1677 Vils, d. 1742 Vienna Austria.

Highly regarded and influential maker of the Viennese school, active from 1706. Appointed luthier to the royal court 1721. Stainer-derived model, with straightened centre bouts. High arch. Excellent workmanship and particularly fine clear golden-yellow varnish. Soundholes set quite upright. Scroll very beautifully and delicately carved, with a characteristically wide throw behind the first turn. Violas, cellos, lutes, and guitars known. After 1721 branded on the back with Austrian double eagle.
