54 Gatto

Description: This violin is a fine old Italian instrument, principally the work of Andrea Gatto of Turin, whose original label it bears dated 166-.

Measurements: 35.5 cm in length of body, with widths of 16.1 cm bare and 19.9 cm.

Violin maker: Gatto, Andrea fl.1665-1679 Turin, Italy. Interesting and rare maker of the early Turin school, influenced by northern European styles: ribs set into the edges of the back in the manner of early Dutch, English and Germanic makers. Elegant outline, Amatisé form with extended slightly hooked corners. Count Cozio de Salabue describes a viola with high arching, flat in the centre, imprecise purfling, large and long soundholes, back without figure, and a fair tone.
